Your support and involvement are important to your child’s success in school. The following list will give you some suggestions for help your child settle into our program. Please practice these with your child at home. Your diligence and effort will be rewarded as you see your child transition smoothly into the classroom.

Pencil Grip-Help your child learn to hold a pencil comfortably and correctly. We recommend a “tripod” grip; pinching the pencil between thumb and forefinger, resting the middle finger behind.

Name Writing-Teach your child to write her/his name starting with an uppercase letter and following with lowercase letters, e.g., Jane (not JANE). Practice identifying and naming all upper and lowercase letters in the alphabet.

Reading and Listening-If you are not already doing so, please choose a quiet time during the day or evening when you and your child can enjoy some books together. Choose familiar books from home, the library, book clubs, magazines, e- readers, etc. - whatever motivates and stimulates your child. Discuss the pictures, the story, characters, plot, etc. Make it an enjoyable part of your daily routine.

Scissors-Practice holding scissors correctly – keep your thumb up and the scissors straight. With the other hand, turn the paper for cutting curved lines. Practice cutting at home under adult supervision.

Restroom-Wear clothing that enables your child to use the restroom independently. Flush and wash hands when finished.

Basic Information-Help your child learn his/her full name, telephone number, address, and birthdate. Count to 10 using fingers. Sing the alphabet song. Learn to tie shoes.
